Partnership with Captina Conservancy

In service of its goal to permanently protect the land, Raven Rocks over the years explored various legal options to ensure the property the group purchased in 1970 and added to over the years would remain a natural area. In 2015, Raven Rocks entered into a conservation easement to accomplish this goal. A conservation easement is a voluntary agreement between and land owner and a conservation organization that runs with the title to the land and protects the land from building and development for perpetuity (forever).

What is Captina Conservancy?

Captina Conservancy is a private, non-profit land trust founded in 2010 whose mission is to promote, preserve, and protect Captina Creek watershed and other regional watersheds. Captina Conservancy accomplishes this mission through holding conservation easements, owning land, and educational activities. Captina Conservancy serves Belmont, Monroe, Guernsey, Noble and Jefferson counties.

Captina Conservancy and Raven Rocks

Since 2015, Captina Conservancy has held a conservation easement with Raven Rocks. Working through the Clean Ohio Greenspace program, Captina Conservancy and Raven Rocks’ conservation easement was the largest contiguous conservation easement in Ohio at the time, at 1,015 acres. Since the placement of the easement, Captina Conservancy and Raven Rocks work together on educational and outreach events at the Rocks.  The Conservancy also preforms annual monitoring of the property.

How can I become involved?

Volunteers and members support the mission of Captina Conservancy every day, at Raven Rocks as well as other properties in eastern Ohio. Volunteers help with litter pick up events, property monitoring, educational events, property maintenance, water quality monitoring, social media posting, and more.
